In this years B+LNZ CPT Results booklet, you will find updated tables of the trait leading sires plus articles about plans for extension of the CPT to hill country and the eco-efficiency of NZ sheep and beef farms. This last article is very interesting and suggests that the massive increases in stock productivity we have seen from farms in the last 20 years have been associated with relatively smaller changes in stocking rate. In other words we are being more efficient than we were.
We now try to use all sires at all CPT sites. This strengthens the connectedness across sites and will help in addressing the issue of whether animals rerank depending on whether progeny performance is measured on the lowland or hill country. Wherever possible, we aim to select rams that can be used at all sites through artificial insemination. That requires semen to be collected before the first mating data of the CPT sites. Typically this occurs at Poukawa first. We will call for expressions of interest to supply sires for the 2014 breeding season in November 2013.
